Photographs document spontaneous shrines near the Pentagon; memorials in Seattle, Washington and other locations. Some also document displays of public reactions, for example, the commentaries on church signage in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Some items were submitted as group projects of schools, libraries, and museums from 30 states in the U.S., and from American military service personnel and their families in Naples, Italy.
<note type="statement of responsibility">collected by the American Folklife Center.</note><note type="additional physical form">Significant portions of this collection are available through the American Memory Digital Library Project of the Library of Congress, titled "September 11, 2001 Documentary Project."</note><note type="additional physical form">Some collection materials were included in a Library of Congress online exhibit, "Witness and Response: September 11 Acquisitions at the Library of Congress."</note><note>The September 11, 2001 Documentary Project Collection (AFC 2001/015), Archive of Folk Culture, American Folklife Center, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.</note><note>Duplication of the collection materials may be governed by copyright and other restrictions.</note><note>The project was initiated on Sept. 12, 2001 by Ann Hoog of the American Folklife Center, who sent an e-mail to folklorists and ethnographers requesting individuals and groups to record thoughts and feelings following the terrorist attacks.</note><note>Finding aid available in the Folklife Reading Room and online via the American Folklife Center web pages.</note><subject><geographicCode authority="marcgac">n-us---</geographicCode><geographicCode authority="marcgac">e-it---</geographicCode></subject><subject authority="lcsh"><topic>September 11 Terrorist Attacks, 2001</topic><genre>Interviews</genre></subject><subject authority="lcsh"><topic>September 11 Terrorist Attacks, 2001</topic><genre>Personal narratives</genre></subject><subject authority="lcsh"><topic>September 11 Terrorist Attacks, 2001, in art</topic></subject><identifier type="lccn" invalid="yes"> 2005615835</identifier><identifier type="lccn">2005700220</identifier><identifier type="hdl">hdl:loc.afc/eadafc.af005002</identifier><identifier type="hdl">hdl:loc.afc/collafc.af000016</identifier><relatedItem type="otherVersion"><location><url displayLabel="Finding aid">http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.afc/eadafc.af005002</url></location></relatedItem><relatedItem type="otherVersion"><location><url displayLabel="Online presentation">http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.afc/collafc.af000016</url></location></relatedItem><location><physicalLocation>DLC-AFC Archive of Folk Culture, American Folklife Center, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, DC USA 20540-4610</physicalLocation></location><accessCondition type="useAndReproduction">Duplication of the collection materials may be governed by copyright and other restrictions.</accessCondition><recordInfo><recordContentSource authority="marcorg">DLC</recordContentSource><recordCreationDate encoding="marc">050405</recordCreationDate><recordChangeDate encoding="iso8601">20080423091149.0</recordChangeDate><recordIdentifier>13921369</recordIdentifier></recordInfo></mods></modsCollection>
