Summary
- Collection of recordings of several enlisted men singing popular songs, folk songs, cowboy songs, and soldiers' songs; tunes played on banjo and harmonica; with several songs accompanied by guitar. Wade Mainer's group, The Mainer Mountaineers from Asheville, North Carolina (which included Wade Mainer, Tiny Dodson, and Jack Shelton) performed traditional old-time music and ballads. "Sailor Dad" John M. Hunt of Marion, Virginia, performed sea shanties and was interviewed by John A. Lomax. These recordings appear to have been made at the rehearsals for "A Program of American Song for American Soldiers," which was the theme for a party held at the Roosevelt White House on February 17, 1941, emceed by Alan Lomax. The collection includes a typed list of the entertainers, including the names of the soldiers from the Negro Cavalry Detachment, Headquarters Company, and Troop G, Fort Myer, Virginia; soldiers from Arlington Cantonment; Marines from Quantico, Virginia; and seamen from the Navy Air Station. Also included is Alan Lomax's speech for the program (5 p.).
