Summary
- In Lost Hope, Canada, Virginia Dixon and Royal Northwest Mounted Police Constable Winthrop are targets of foreign agents who are after the platinum which Virginia's brother mined and buried before he was murdered. The platinum is important in the manufacture of munitions. In this chapter, foreign agents have imprisoned Virginia and loosed a lion in her underground cell. Virginia manages to escape into an adjoining room where Winthrop finds her and they begin their escape. Virginia discovers another coded letter describing the hiding place of the platinum. Because Virginia now has both letters from her brother, she is able to decipher the code. Winthrop finds the platinum near a spot known as the "Red Ace" and brings it back to Virginia's hut. While Winthrop and a few other police hold off the foreign agents, Virginia travels by canoe in an attempt to reach the railroad with the platinum. Bertha Sweir, a foreign agent, upsets Virginia's canoe with her motor boat. The platinum sinks to the bottom and Virginia is thrown into the water. The ape-like being which killed Virginia's brother is revealed to be a man in an ape costume working for the foreign agents.
