Summary
- A merchant has three daughters, all of whom are beautiful, but only one, Belle, combines goodness with loveliness. Caught in a storm, he takes refuge in an old castle. The next day, a hideous monster appears, berates him for his ingratitude and says he must die. The merchant begs to see his children and the beast relents but insists he must return in a few days. Belle takes her father's place and on seeing her, the beast falls in love. She is repulsed by the beast but lives in the castle. The beast is very polite and she comes to feel some emotion for him. The beast allows her to return to her family for a few days with the help of a magic glove. Her sisters steal the glove and her brothers are killed by the beast as they try to plunder his wealth. Belle recovers the glove and returns to the beast, who is dying as he waits for her. She kisses him and he turns into a prince. They ascend to his home.
