Identification of the S.S. City of Sydney is based on research by Eugene Williams. Second ship was previously identified as the S.S. City of Peking, however footage of the three-masted second ship does not match still images of the four-masted City of Peking at on the Naval History and Heritage Command WWW site and the Spanish American War Centennial WWW site.
Paper print shelf number (LC 1908) was changed when the paper prints were re-housed.

Filmed May 25, 1898, in San Francisco, California.
Shows the departure from San Francisco of two troop ships, the S.S. Australia and the S.S. City of Sydney, bound for Manila during the Spanish-American War. The first ship shown is the Australia with many troops on deck, some waving. The ship's name is visible on the hull at the end of the sequence. The second ship, the City of Sydney, is shown being escorted by two harbor tugs. These two steamships left San Francisco on May 25, 1898, along with a third troop ship, the S.S. City of Peking (not visible in the film).
