Summary
- Chiefly diaries as well as correspondence, literary manuscripts, notes, sketches, photographs, and other papers. Diaries reflect Smith's work at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and include accounts of trips to Florida and Europe; notebook describing plants in Washington, D.C.; synopses of his research; and catalog of his scientific library. Subjects include family affairs, international news, and literature. Smith's travels on behalf of the Agriculture Department are sometimes featured, such as a trip to Florida to study diseases in oranges groves described in his journal of 1891. Also includes corrected proofs of a volume of Smith's poetry entitled For Her Friends and Mine (1915), dedicated to his late wife, Charlotte M. Buffett Smith; notes and illustrations for a projected edition of the poems of José Maria de Heredia, whose sonnets Smith had translated; and letters from Frank Nicholas Meyer relating to a 1905 botanical expedition to China and Japan.
