Some time before 1864, the land was claimed by Walter Sunderland, who established a stock ranch. On December 8, 1864, he sold out to Joseph M. Pomeroy, who had been a mechanic for Wells, Fargo & Company. On May 28, 1878, Pomeroy platted the area as a town site named for him the same year building the Pomeroy Hotel. At one time the place reportedly supported the extraordinary number of twenty saloons. It was incorporated February 3, 1886)
