In a hostile takeover in 1987, he gained control of the media conglomerate Viacom, and a few years later he bought Paramount and CBS. The deals catapulted him to the front rank of entertainment giants, with the ownership of such properties as Showtime, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and BET.
