Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 4, p. 284 (Putyvl or Putyvel; a town on the Seim River in Sumy oblast. First mentioned in historical sources of 1146, Putyvl was established in 988. Throughout its history the city had been part of Kievan Rus', the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and Muscovy. In the 17th cent. it was part of Slobidska Ukraine, and by the 19th cent. it had become a county center of Kursk gubernia. In 1926 Putyvl became part of the Ukrainian SSR)
