Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 4, p. 122 (Polonne; a city and raion center in Khmelnytskyi oblast. It was first mentioned in historical documents of 996. It had become a fortress town by the 12th cent., and was attached by Tatar hordes in the 13th cent. Polonne eventually became part of hte Principality of Galicia-Volhynia. In 1569 it was acquired by Poland. It was captured in 1648 by Cossack armies but was recaptured by Poland. In 1793 after the partition of Poland it was annexed by Russia and became part of the Volhynia gubernia. Polonne is noted as an important center of the porcelain industry)
