Kroll; William Justin Kroll; became generally known for development (1937) of a process for production of titanium, which later bore his name as Kroll-process, brought him the appellation "Titanium-Kroll"; other studies and developments in metallurgy, particularly non-ferrous metallurgy; born November 24th 1889 in Esch/Alzette, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg; graduated 1909 at Atheneum in Luxembourg City; university 1910-1918: faculty of metallurgy of Technische Hochschule, Berlin-Charlottenburg; 1918-1922: worked in Kall/Schleiden (Germany), Vienna, Hungary, Baden-Baden; developed new alloys, various patents; 1923, settled down in Luxembourg City, set up metallurgical lab; first titanium machined in 1938 at Cerametal company; visited USA in 1932, 1938; February 10, 1940, fled Luxembourg; immigrated to USA, applied for American citizenship December 4, 1940; May 1940, became consulting engineer for Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Niagara Falls; 1945-1951, consulting metallurgist for US Bureau of Mines research lab at Albany, Oregon; participated in production of first zirconium strip; 1952-1961, devoted self to metallurgical studies at Oregon State University, where had an office, made donation in 1960; home in Corvallis, Oregon; established non-profit Metal Research Foundation; a Kroll-Institute was established with funds from the Kroll foundation, first at University of Missouri, then at Colorado School of Mines; last publishing activity 1955; left United States in 1961, retired to Rhode St. Genèse, near Brussels) pages 55-58 (bibliography of technical reports authored by Kroll 1940-1944; titles in English)
