Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: pages 846-847 (Augustus Owsley Stanley; born in Shelbyville, Ky. on May 21, 1867; attended Kentucky Agricultural and Mechanical College in Lexington, Ky. and graduated from Centre College in 1889. Taught at several schools, then read law and was admitted to the bar in 1894. Moved to Henderson, Ky., and was elected to the first of six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (March 4, 1903-March 3, 1915). Served as Kentucky's governor from 1915 to 1919. Elected to U.S. Senate, serving from May 19, 1919 to March 3, 1925. Opened a law practice in Washington D. C. where he later died in August 12, 1958.)
