African American National Biography, accessed December 12 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Dungy, Tony; Anthony Kevin Dungy; football player, athletic coach / manager; born 06 October 1955 in Jackson, Michigan, United States; enrolled at the University of Minnesota (1973), where as a freshman he played quarterback on the football team; that after graduating (1977) with a BA in Business, entered the NFL draft as a free agent and was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers; was named starting safety with the Steelers and played with that team in Super Bowl XIII; was named the Steelers' defensive coordinator-the first African American to rise to that sideline position in the NFL (1984); he took over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a head coach (1996); won the 2006 Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts; participated in several charitable organizations, including the Prison Crusade Ministry, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the Boys and Girls Club)
