African American National Biography, accessed January 23, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Gans, Joe; boxer; born 25 November 1874 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States; fought for lightweight championship in New York City, but was knocked out by titleholder Frank Erne (1900); won next nineteen fights, including eleven straight knockouts, and even knocked out champion Erne in a rematch in Fort Erie, Canada (1902); occasionally fought at higher weights, taking on physically stronger boxers like middleweight black CanadianSam Langford, and welterweight champion Joe Walcott from Bermuda; the most memorable win of its time took place against challenger O. M. Battling Nelson in Goldfield, Nevada (1906); known for 156 professional fights, a record of 120 wins, 8 losses, 10 draws, and 18 no-decisions; nearly half of victories (55) came from knockouts; considered by many boxing experts the greatest lightweight fighter of the time; honors include, elected to the Ring magazine Hall of Fame (1954); died 10 August 1910 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States)
