Jan. 11, 1917; Russian diplomat, who served as ambassador to Denmark and United Kingdom; son of Count Constantin Alexander von Benckendorff and Princess Louise de Croy; educated in France and Germany before entering diplomatic service in 1869; in 1886, became first secretary at embassy in Vienna,; from 1897 to 1903 served as ambassador to Denmark; from 1903 til death in 1917, served as ambassador to Court of St. James's, chief Russian diplomat in United Kingdom; organized signing of Anglo-Russian Entente in 1907)
