Wikipedia, viewed April 8, 2022 (Laika (Russian: Лайка = Laĭka; c. 1954-November 3, 1957) was a Soviet space dog who became one of the first animals in space, and the first animal to orbit the Earth; Soviet personnel gave her several names and nicknames, among them Kudryavka (Russian for Little Curly), Zhuchka (Little Bug), and Limonchik (Little Lemon); according to some accounts, the technicians actually renamed her from Kudryavka to Laika due to her loud barking)
