Dictionary of African Biography, accessed March 5, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Ojukwu, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu; political figure, historian, presidential candidate, foreign military officer; born 1933 in Zungeru, Nigeria; educated at King's College in Lagos and Epsom College in Surrey; received a master's degree in history from Lincoln College, Oxford University; joined the civil service (1955); joined the fledgling Nigerian army (1957); he was sent to Eaton Hall, the National Service Officer Cadet School near Chester England (February 1958); became a battalion commander at Kano (1966); he refused to attack the civilian government; appointed military governor of the Eastern Region; declared the Eastern Region the independent Republic of Biafra (30 May 1967); made the Ahiara Declaration, in which he modeled the Biafran struggle in terms of the pan-Africanist struggle against neo-colonialism; fled the collapsing state for the Ivory Coast (11 January 1970); ran for president twice but was not elected (1999; 2007))
