Dictionary of African Biography, accessed March 05, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Gowon, Yakubu Jack; president, government official (foreign), soldier, army chief of staff; born 19 October 1934 in Lur, Plateau State, Nigeria; devout Christian from the Northern Region; attended the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst; was sent to Britain to attend the Staff College at Camberley (1962); completed a PhD in political science in the UK; reached the rank of lieutenant colonel and become a battalion commander (by the end of 1965); was appointed to the position of military chief of staff, becoming the youngest man appointed to this position in Nigeria's history; made head of the Federal Military Government; unilaterally declared the creation of the new structure of twelve states (1967); sought to reintegrate the Igbo into Nigerian society and to restore economic stability to Nigeria; was sent to exile in the United Kingdom (1975))
