Oxford DNB online, 15 May 2019 (Maclean, John (1879-1923); revolutionary socialist, was born in Pollokshaws, Glasgow, on 14 August 1879; entered the Free Church Teacher Training College in 1898 and qualified as a teacher in 1900. He was then employed by the Govan school board until dismissed during the First World War, effectively on account of his wartime political activities; graduated with an MA degree in 1904 from Glasgow University; joined the Social Democratic Federation (SDF) in late 1902 or early 1903 ... later the British Socialist Party (BSP); prominent in the Clyde rent strike of 1915 and by early 1916 was arrested again; created the Scottish Workers' Republican Party (SWRP) in February 1923; died in Glasgow of pneumonia on 30 November 1923)
