Dictionary of African Biography, accessed May 02, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Kouyaté, Seydou Badian; fiction writer; born 10 April 1928 in Mali; doctorate in medicine from the Université de Montpellier (1955); early militant in the independence-minded African Democratic Rally (RDA); minister of economy and planning, rural development, foreign affairs, and adviser (1960's); jailed for seven years before being forced into exile in neighboring Senegal (1975); penned the anthem of Mali as the country's own (1962); published the novel Sous l'orage (Caught in the Storm) (1957); went on to publish the play, La mort de Chaka (The Death of Chaka) (1961); published Les dirigeants d'Afrique noire face à leur peuple (Leaders of Black Africa and Their People) (1965); other notable writings include, Le sang des masques (The Blood of Masks) and Noces sacrées: les Dieux du Kouroulamini (1976, 1977))
