Attended Lewis Institute in Chicago and Princeton University. Began his career in 1906 as a staff member at the "Louisville Herald" and was editor in chief of the "Louisville Times" 1919-1923. Moved to Washington D.C. in 1923 to become the Washington correspondent for the "Louisville Courier-Journal" and the "Louisville Times". Joined the "New York Times" May 1, 1927 and became the Washington D.C. bureau chief in 1932. His coverage of the New Deal won a Pulitzer prize in 1935; his interview with President Franklin D. Roosevelt won his second Pulitzer in 1938; his third came for an interview with President Harry Truman in 1950 and his fourth for distinguished Washington coverage in 1955. Wrote two autobiographies. Died in Washington D.C. April 12, 1974.) |
