(The Knights of Malta Grand Priory of England [no publs. in LC data base] was dissolved in 1540; after a short reinstatement, its estates were again confiscated in 1558; revived in 1831, but not recognized by the Lt. Master in Rome as Protestant branch of order, it became in 1858 an indep. national body, active throughout British Empire. Through Royal charter of 1926, its name chgd from Grand Priory of England [no publs. in LC data base] to Grand Priory in the British Realm [no publs. in LC data base]. Through 1955 Royal charter it became The Grand Priory in the British Realm of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem; referred to also as The Order of St. John)
