Nov 29, 1501; Italian architect, engineer, painter, illuminator, sculptor, medallist, theorist, and writer; activities as diplomat led to employment at courts of Naples, Milan, and Urbino, as well as in Siena; most paintings and miniatures before 1475; as painter, Neroccio de' Landi moved in same artistic circles from 1469, worked with him until 1474; by 1480s and 1490s, Francesco among leading architects in Italy, particularly as military architect; palace and church architecture influential in spreading the Urbino style; his theoretical works, which include first important Western writings on military engineering, not published until modern times but keenly studied in manuscript, by Leonardo da Vinci among others, foreshadowed developments that came to fruition in 16th century; possibly apprenticed to painter Francesco di Bartolomeo Alfei; generally thought (although undocumented) to have studied with painter, sculptor il Vecchietta; 1st professional involvement with building was in civil engineering: subterranean conduits for city water supply; living in Urbino from at least 1476; around 1477, Opusculum, codex illustrated with drawings of machines and fortresses, dedicated to Federigo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino; worked on numerous fortifications of duchy of Montefeltro; multiple architectural works in Urbino, including Palazzo ducale and new cathedral; in 1486, bought farm near Urbino; also projects in Siena, returned to Siena ca. 1486-1488; from 1490, was sought for projects and consultations all over Italy, including Milan, Florence, and Naples; The Trattati, title conventionally given to Francesco di Giorgio's collected writings: essays on role of architect in relation to new Renaissance interests in techniques and ancient buildings)
