Telephone call to Elaine Cherry, director of publications of the Society, July 12, 1985 (legal name of the society is still Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers; its publications are still copyrighted by the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. The phrase "the international society for optical engineering" is a descriptive term and not part of the Society's name. SPIE has always been the acronym of the Society's names. The Society has changed its name only once, in the 1960's, from Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers to the present name: Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers)
