Graduated from Transylvania University in 1835 with his medical degree and practiced medicine in Versailles, Ky. Served in the House of the General Assembly 1834-1844 as a Whig. Moved to Natchez, Mississippi where he worked to combat yellow fever there and in Memphis, Tennessee, Florida, and Hickman, Kentucky. Earned the Democratic nomination for governor of Kentucky in 1879; served as governor of Kentucky 1879-1883. During his governorship he worked to improve the prison system in the commonwealth. Died September 14, 1887 and was buried in the Frankfort, Ky. cemetery.)
