Upon the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he and wife Zenobia Camprubí went into exile in Cuba, the United States, and Puerto Rico, where he settled in 1946. He was a Professor of Spanish Language and Literature at the University of Maryland, College Park and at the University of Miami, in Coral Gables, Florida)
