He was born June 9, 1804 in Poland and died August 20, 1872 in Saint Petersburg (Russia). All his fortune Mikhail Kachkovsky bequeathed to education of Galician countrymen and to dissimination of Russian language and culture. With these funds and in memory of the merits of the philantropist, in 1874, the Society of Mikhail Kachkovsky (Общество имени Михаила Качковского = Obshchestvo imeni Mikhaila Kachkovskogo) was founded in Galicia; the society had the task of educating and raising the level of economic well-being of the Rusyns, through the dissemination of knowledge, including publishing popular books)
