New Catholic Encyc. (Fordham University; first called St. John's College, in honor of St. John the Baptist, opened June 24, 1841; April 10, 1846, N.Y. St. Legis. granted college power to confer lit. honors, degrees, and diplomas; June 1846 school placed under direction of Jesuits from St. Mary's, Kentucky, who had purchased the college property; on March 7, 1907, the charter of St. John's College was amended and the institution received the corporate name of Fordham University; the college of liberal arts remained St. John's College, Fordham University until Nov. 19, 1931, when it was renamed Fordham College)
