The University of Maryland was established in Baltimore in 1812 as four graduate schools; in 1830 it merged with Baltimore College, retaining the university name. The Maryland Agricultural College (founded in 1856) changed its name to Maryland State College of Agriculture in 1916. In 1920 the university, wanting an undergraduate school, merged with the college in College Park under the name University of Maryland.
Some subdivisions of the 1920- University of Maryland that were located in Baltimore were established under this heading. In the 1970's when the University of Maryland system was created and the University of Maryland at Baltimore was administratively organized, those subdivisions became part of the University of Maryland at Baltimore.
