"C(harles) B(uckles) Falls," in Contemporary Authors Online, 1998, accessed via Literature Resource Center, January 12, 2017 "Born December 10, 1874, in Fort Wayne, Ind.; died April 15, 1960, in New York, N.Y. Artist, illustrator, publisher, editor, and author. Falls was an adept and prolific illustrator of children's books. His artistic knowledge and training grew entirely from work experience and self-instruction, gained while he was employed as an architect's assistant and later as a sketch artist at the Chicago Tribune. When Falls left the paper, he subsequently landed a job designing book covers for an art studio. He ultimately became a free-lance artist and worked extensively in advertising, book and magazine illustration, printmaking, and various aspects of design, including murals, costumes, and posters. It was for the latter that Falls gained prominence in the field of American art ... Fall's signature also features its own style. On many of his illustrations, Falls drew a small box with his name or simply with the initial "F". This signature became so well-known that eventually he was able to drop the initial from the box")
