Lutheran cyclopedia, 1954 (Walther, Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm; born Oct. 25, 1811, Langenchursdorf, Saxony; he was ordained in 1837 to the ministry at Braeunsdorf, Saxony; emigrated from Germany to the United States, arriving at St. Louis in February, 1839; when the Missouri Synod was organized in 1847, he was elected its first president, serving as such until 1850 and again from 1864 to 1878; Walther served as professor of theology at Concordia Seminary from 1850 until his death; he died on May 7, 1887)
