Durham; a founder member of the National Party of Scotland in 1928; established himself in 1933 on the Hebridean island of Barra; moved to Edinburgh in 1952; died at his home in Edinburgh on 30 November 1972; was appointed OBE in 1919 and knighted in 1952. He was CLit (1968), FRSL, honorary RSA, and honorary LLD of Glasgow and St Francis Xavier University; works include Whisky galore)
