She graduated from Yesayan Parochial School and the English High School in Constantinople, gaining fluency in Armenian, English and French. In 1915 she moves to Geneva and studied in University of Geneva and in 1919 studies in Sorbonne University, Paris. She moved to the United States in 1930 and taught in Wellesley College, Massachusetts. Der Nersessian became the chairwoman of the Department of Art History and Director of Farnsworth Museum.)
