Special noteThe Maryland Geological Survey (officially: State Geological and Economic Survey) was established in 1896. The State Geological and Economic Survey Advisory Commission was established in 1922 as an advisory body to the Geological Survey. In 1941 the Bureau of Mines, Geological Survey, State Geological and Economic Survey Advisory Commission, Water Front Commission, and Water Resources Commission (created in 1933) were merged to form the Dept. of Geology, Mines and Water Resources. The latter was superseded in 1964 by two bodies: the reestablished Geological Survey, and the newly created Dept. of Water Resources, which also superseded the Water Pollution Control Commission (appointed in 1947).
