Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 854 (John White Stevenson, governor of Kentucky 1867-1871, born in Richmond, Virginia on May 4, 1812. Attended University of Virginia and read law. Moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi, then to Covington, Ky. Elected in 1845 as a Democrat to the state House of Representatives for two successive terms. Served two terms in the U.S. House (March 4, 1857-March 3, 1861) Elected lieutenant governor in 1867, then became governor when John L. Helm died five days after taking office. Resigned as governor February 13, 1871 after being elected to U.S. Senate, where he served March 4, 1871 until March 3, 1877 then returned to his Covington law practice. Taught in the Cincinnati Law School and was elected president of the American Bar Association. Died in Covington on August 10, 1886.)
