Wikipedia, May 4, 2016 (The Merchant of Venice is a play by William Shakespeare in which a merchant in 16th-century Venice must default on a large loan provided by an abused Jewish moneylender. It is believed to have been written between 1596 and 1598. Though classified as a comedy in the First Folio and sharing certain aspects with Shakespeare's other romantic comedies, the play is perhaps most remembered for its dramatic scenes, and is best known for Shylock and the famous "Hath not a Jew eyes?" speech. Film and TV versions: 1914, The Merchant of Venice, silent film directed by Lois Weber and Phillips Smalley; 1916, The Merchant of Venice, a silent British film directed by Walter West; 1923, The Merchant of Venice, a silent German film directed by Peter Paul Felner; 1969, The Merchant of Venice, an unreleased 40-minute television film directed by and starring Orson Welles; 1972, British video-taped television version directed by Cedric Messina for the BBC's Play of the Month series; 1973, The Merchant of Venice, British video-taped television version directed by John Sichel, 1980, The Merchant of Venice, a BBC video-taped version for the BBC Television Shakespeare directed by Jack Gold; 1996, The Merchant of Venice, a Channel 4 television film directed by Alan Horrox; 2001, The Merchant of Venice, a BBC television film directed by Trevor Nunn; 2002, The Maori Merchant of Venice, directed by Don Selwyn; 2003, Shakespeare's Merchant, directed by Paul Wagar; 2004, The Merchant of Venice, directed by Michael Radford. Operas: Josef Bohuslav Foerster's three-act Czech opera Jessika; Reynaldo Hahn's three-act French opera Le marchand de Venise; André Tchaikowsky's opera The Merchant of Venice)
The merchant of Venice: Q & A, viewed online May 4, 2016 (The play has been dated as early as 1594 and as late as 1598, but 1596 seems to be the most plausible date of composition. In September 1598, Francis Meres published his Palladis Tamia, in which he mentions Shakespeare and, specifically, The Merchant of Venice. Shakespeare makes a reference to a ship called the St. Andrew (I.i.27) - a real Spanish ship captured in the sack of Cádiz in 1596. Salerio says, "See my wealthy Andrew docked in sand, veiling her high-top lower than her ribs to kiss her burial" (1.1.27). So it seems logical that the play was written in 1596 or shortly after.)
