Bolʹsh. sov. ėnt︠s︡ikl., 3rd ed.: v. 22, p. 590 (Saratov; founded in 1590 as a fortress city guarding the Volga. After the fire of 1616 the city was rebuilt on the left bank of the Volga. In 1674 Saratov was relocated to the right bank of the Volga where it quickly became an important industrial and commercial trade center. From 1708 Saratov was part of the Kazanskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡, then it became part of the Astrakhanskaia gubernii︠a︡. From 1780 it was the center of a viceregency, and from 1797 it was part of the Saratovskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡. Soviet power was established there on 11-09-1917. From 1928 Saratov was the center of the Nizhnevolzhskiĭ kraĭ, and from 1930 the center of the Saratovskiĭ kraĭ which eventually became the Saratovskai︠a︡ oblastʹ)
