Biography/History noteThe University of Nevada, Reno, is a state-supported institution of higher learning and research that is administered under the Nevada System of Higher Education. It was originally established in 1874 as the State University of Nevada in Elko, Nevada, which was renamed as Nevada State University in 1881 and moved to Reno in 1885. In 1906, Nevada State University was renamed the University of Nevada. The University of Nevada's Southern Regional Division at Las Vegas was established in 1955; in 1965, its name was changed to Nevada Southern University. In 1968, the University of Nevada System was established as a central body responsible for state-supported institutions of higher learning and research in Nevada, with administrative control over four divisions. Under the System, the University of Nevada became the University of Nevada, Reno. (Nevada Southern University became the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The Desert Research Institute of the University of Nevada (established in 1959) became the third division of the System. The fourth division was the Community College Division.) The name of the University of Nevada System was later changed to the University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN), then, in 2004, to the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE).
