| History note | The origins of the male order of Carmelites date to the 13th cent. A branch called the Discalced Carmelites was formed in the 2d half of the 16th cent. In 1593 the Discalced Carmelites became an independent order. In 1600 the order split into a Spanish Congregation and an Italian Congregation, both of which retained the name Discalced Carmelites though independent. They were reunited in 1875 to form the Discalced Carmelites (Ordo Fratrum Carmelitarum Discalceatorum (OCD)). The calced Carmelites (Ordo Fratrum B. M. V. de Monte Carmelo (OCarm)) have remained a separate order since the original division in the 16th century. Works by the undivided order (i.e. from its foundation to 1593) and by the calced order after the division (1593- ) are found under Carmelites. Works by the discalced order before its own division (1593-1600) and after the reunification (1875- ) are found under Discalced Carmelites. Works by the two independent congregations of the discalced order (1600-1875) are found under Discalced Carmelites (Italian Congregation) Discalced Carmelites (Spanish Congregation) Both the calced Carmelites and the Discalced Carmelites have their female branches, or Second Orders, as well as affiliated sisterhoods under various names. The Second order of the Carmelites, known as Carmelite Nuns, was founded in 1452; its first sisters had formerly been members of a loosely organized movement known as the Beguines. In the 16th cent. the Second Order of the Discalced Carmelites developed, separating from the Carmelite Nuns; it became known as Discalced Carmelite Nuns. The calced order is often called Carmelite Nuns of the Ancient Observance. Works by the order of Carmelite Nuns prior to the 16th cent. division, and by the calced order after the division, are found under Carmelite Nuns. Works by the Discalced Carmelite Nuns are found under Discalced Carmelite Nuns.
