Gibb; he was a Scotish historian on Orientalism; born on 2 January 1895, in Alexandria, Egypt; attended Edinburgh University, breaking off his studies during World War I; after the war, studies Arabic at the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University, gaining his MA (1922); was editor of the Encyclopedia of Islam; taught at the School of Oriental Studies, St John's College, Oxford and Harvard University)
