Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 195 ("George Rogers Clark", surveyor, soldier, and militia officer, was born on November 19, 1752 near Monticello, Albemarle County, Virginia. Self-taught surveyor, he surveyed for the Ohio Company, laying out part of Leesburg (now part of Frankfort, Ky.) and later, Clarksville, Ind. He was a delegate for the 1776 convention in which Kentucky County was created. Served as a lieutenant colonel in the Revolutionary War in which he led multiple secret expeditions that captured Kaskasia and Vincennes. Later established Fort Nelson at the Falls of the Ohio, first Anglo-American settlement in the vicinity of modern-day Louisville in 1778, and led several raids against the Shawnee. Assumed a military commission from France to attack Spanish-held New Orleans until the United States government notified him that continuing in this position would result in his arrest. Moved to Clark's Point in Clarksville, Indiana in 1803 and proposed a canal to circumvent the falls. Moved to his sister's home near Louisville until his death on February 13, 1818.)
