Best known for his Miles Franklin Award-winning novel 'Poor fellow my country' (1975); His first book, 'Capricornia', won the Australian Literature Society Gold Medal for Australia's best novel of 1939. He was well known for his outspoken views on indigenous issues, and was a great champion of Aboriginal peoples. He is considered one of the elder statesmen of Australian literature.)
