Tutte, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Waterloo, died May 2, 2002 of congestive heart failure; born May 14, 1917 at Fitzroy House in Newmarket, England; entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1935, studying chemistry, pausing from 1941 to 1945 to work at Bletchley Park code-breaking, and returning as a graduate student in mathematics; in 1948, joined the University of Toronto, rising to preeminence in the field of combinatorics, moving in 1962 to the University of Waterloo; awarded the Tory Medal by the Royal Society of Canada in 1975, the Killam Prize in 1982, and the CRC-Fields Institute Prize in 2001; a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, made a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1987 and inducted as an Officer in the Order of Canada in 2001)

As a young mathematician and codebreaker, he deciphered a series of German military encryption codes known as FISH. This has been described as one of the greatest intellectual feats of World War II. Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Honorary Director of the Centre for Cryptographic Research at the University of Waterloo, he remains one of the most influential figures in combinatorics; deceased on May 2, 2002)
