African American National Biography, accessed December 21, 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Grimes, Henry; Henry Alonzo Grimes; bassist, composer/arranger, jazz musician; born 03 November 1935 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States; began playing bass and performing for Philadelphia's all-city orchestra (1948-1952); graduated from Juilliard School of Music in New York (1954); joined Gerry Mulligan's quartet (1956); recorded several albums for the Pacific Jazz label; began touring Europe extensively with Sonny Rollins, the tenor saxophone giant (late 1950s); recorded “Funk Dumpling” with the clarinetist Perry Robinson for the Savoy label (1962); participated in School Days, recognized as one of the most musically innovative ensembles of the early 1960s avant-garde jazz scene; played on a number of sessions with the saxophonist Albert Ayler (1964); recorded “The Call” with the Henry Grimes Trio and it was released by ESP-Disk (1966); moved to California (1968); a star performer at the annual Vision Festival in New York (2003))
