His nickname came from his hometown, Cayce. At 18 he moved to Jackson, Tenn. to work for the Mobile & Ohio Railroad. In 1888 he became engineer for what was later called the Illinois Central Railroad. Due to his skill he was made engineer on January 1900 on the New Orleans Special, known as the "Cannonball", the fastest passenger train between Chicago and New Orleans. Died in the train crash between the Cannonball and two freight trains, though he saved the lives of his fireman and all passengers on the train. Died on April 30, 1900 close to Vaughan, Mississippi.) |
