Biog. dir. of the U.S. Congress (Lyon, Matthew; emigrated from Ireland to the U.S. in 1765; settled in Vermont in 1774; served as an officer with the Green Mountain Boys during the American Revolution; member of the state House of Representatives, 1779-83; founded the town of Fair Haven, Vt., 1783; served an additional 10 years in the state House of Representatives during the period 1783-96; built and operated several kinds of mills; established a printing office at Fair Haven in 1793 and published the Farmers' Library and the Fair Haven Gazette; elected to the 5th and 6th Congresses, 1797-1801; moved to Kentucky in 1801; member of the Kentucky House of Representatives, 1802; elected to the 8th-11th Congresses, 1803-11; served as U.S. factor to the Cherokee Nation in the Arkasas Territory; b. County Wicklow, Ireland, July 14, 1749; d. Spadra Bluff, Ark., Aug. 1, 1822)
