It was the center of Sumy Regiment (1658-1765) and the seat of administration for all the regiments of Slobidska Ukraine (1732-43). It then became the center of Sumy Province of Slobidska Ukraine Gubernia (1765-80) and a county center in Kharkiv Viceregency (1780-96), and Slobidska Ukraine Gubernia (1796-1835), and Kharkiv Gubernia (1835-1923).
