Lecturer at Institut pontifical d'eĢtudes arabes in 1968; appointed lecturer in the Department of Religious Studies at University of Makerere, Kampala, Uganda, in 1969. 1972-1978, Director of Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies; 1972 became consultor of Secretariat for Non-Christians, later named Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue; 1980 elected to General Council of the Missionaries of Africa in Rome; 1987, appointed Secretary of the Secretariat for Non-Christians (renamed in 1988 Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue); became President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue in October, 2002; appointed titular bishop of Nepte, Tunisia, in 1991; raised to Archbishop in October, 2002; appointed Apostlic Nuncio to Egypt and Delegate to the League of Arab States on February 15, 2006; retired in 2012 and will stay at the Missionaries of Africa in Jerusalem)
