Mr. McBratney was born in Belfast on March 1, 1943, and was a 1965 graduate of Trinity College in Dublin . He was a history teacher in primary and grammar schools before the first of his more than 50 books was published in 1976. He didn't become a full-time writer until he retired from teaching)
