Wiley Online Library (website), viewed May 23, 2023: Fritz Vögtle (1939-2017) (Fritz Vögtle, Professor Emeritus of Organic Chemistry and former Director of the Kekulé Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Bonn passed away on January 3, 2017. He was significantly involved in the development of supramolecular chemistry as a new and seminal research field, and his outstanding achievements, including dendrimer, catenane, rotaxane, and knot synthesis, brought this area to both national and international attention. Fritz Vögtle was born on March 8, 1939 in Ehingen, close to the city of Ulm (Swabia, Germany). In 1958, he began to study chemistry at the University of Freiburg. In 1960, he moved to the University of Heidelberg, where he received his diploma in 1963. Only two years later, he completed his PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) under the supervision of Heinz A. Staab with a thesis on Schiff bases. In the work for his habilitation, which he also carried out at the University of Heidelberg and already completed in 1969, he studied steric interactions in the inside of cyclic compounds (newly synthesized phanes) with the help of NMR spectroscopy. In 1970 (at the age of 31 years), Vögtle received the offer of a position as associate professor and moved to the University of Würzburg. In 1975, he accepted the call as full professor and Director of the Kekulé Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Bonn, where he was active in research and teaching until his retirement in 2006.)
